Weight! Can you hold it right?
Is losing
weight
on your mind? Or, have you dieted before,
and then felt the law thermodynamics got suspended? The
desire to weigh less, is not uncommon. And, an initial
reaction may be that you decide to eat less and you will
lose. But, herein lies the rub, if you have tried it a
few times and you failed or could not hold, you may become
discouraged.
It is not the intent to set a tone of futility about deciding
to lose. Yet, it is by intent that some problems will be red
flagged. Unlike Mark Twain's comment about smoking that it
was easy to quit, and he had done it thousands of times, we
don't like to submit quitting to eat in the same vein. And,
losing weight may be a worthy objective, and, it may be
more complex to succeed with than some addictions.
Choosing to lose may sometimes initially seem like
an easy decision. It is an exercise of the will. But, to
believe that obesity is a pure will problem is fallacy. The
whole gamut of factors will not be covered here. And, take
the initial low tone of this presentation as intent to avoid
later discouragement and not as a spoiler about deciding on
losing.
Weight rebalancing can clinically present as a need to gain
as well as predominantly how to lose. And, let us agree that
though bulemics and anorexics need to gain, they are far
enough beyond the pale of normalcy that self-help, the intent
here, is inappropriate. And, though both sides of this
equation have conditions that need attention, the full
coverage of such here is beyond my scope.
A not uncommon problem, I feel, is that dieter sets a wrong
target. An over estimate of what is needed or achievable may
increase discouragement. A second closely allied misbelief,
unexpressed, is that if you lose to your set target, it will
stay there without more concious ongoing withholding of food
than was needed to stay at your former weight. Every specific
weight has a distinct energy balance to hold it static. And,
at any and every level you can vary the energy taken in, food,
and you can vary the energy used, that is exercise.
By intuition, or by observation, you likely concur that when
you are bored and tired, you are more likely to eat, than when
rested and busy and excited. Apropo to this, consider sleep
apnea. In the extreme, the apneic must wake every few minutes
to breath. They only get very superficial sleep, and even ten
hours of assumed rest, leaves them tired and groggy through
the day. If you're such, consider getting help for the sleep
problem first, though obesity is a co-factor here.
Let us submit a concept of pleasure substitution. Consider that
you have a defined limit to the pleasure you can withhold from
before you stress out. Concurrent to this is that you have a
higher tolerance of food deprivation if you can replace that
loss with another pleasure. Melding the several thoughts,
consider that with calory withholding you leave some pleasure
in the eating, and for the exercise you add you find something
you enjoy doing.
The body functions as a complex factory. The homeostatic
processes include ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation
and energy production. A full gamut of chemical and surgical
interventions for a healthy weight covers attacking almost any
of these processes. There is no intent here to extend this
discourse to include them.
Consider this. Why not plot for weighloss as you would plot
an adventure trip. Get information on food portions and content,
and keep it varied and interesting. Similarly look to engage in
sport or an exercise you enjoy. For some joining a group may
add a spark of motivation and encouragement.
This site does not now have all the information to plan
your individual program from, and I plan add to it in time,
and also, I intend to add references to other sites with
useful complementary information.
And here is one such site:
http://www.weight-loss-thru-healthy-living.com .
And here is another suitable reference for earning good
health by
taking off fat and adding muscle.
And, if appearance matters to you, then take a look
at a site that promotes becoming, or staying,
slim and trim.
Also, fighting diabetes and weight control have much in
common. And thus, an ebook, an information product to
help to
fight diabetes 2
may be of interest.
