The Hearing Aid - will it deliver conversation understood?

A hearing aid may have more asked of it than to purely magnify ambient sound received. The reason, the hearer's impairment may not be the same for every frequency. If for you to understand a single speaker, you need be closer than normal, or have the speaker raise their voice to understand him/her, you have a mild hearing problem. If now we add that the speech is adequately loud but yet words are indistinct or garbled, and we are beset with a complex problem. Here, a background noise adds to the challenge, and, simply amplifying ambient sound does not fully restore full speech perception.

Now, there was a time, and still is, when the audiophile went agog about stereo and high fidelity sound. But, with a hearing aid, for some needs, we are hoping, that some ambient sound frequencies can be suppressed, and other frequencies enhanced. This is more complex than reproducing sound accurately.

The initial such devices and the batteries were too large to mount on the head. These hearing aids were carried in the shirt or the jacket pocket. And the sound from the speaker was air conducted by tube to the ear canal. Today the receiver and speaker are placed on the ear and even in the ear canal.

From Wichipedia I get that we can give information about size and position of the device by the short cut of an acronym. Thereby we get: BTE = behind the ear; ITE = in the ear; RIC/RITE = receiver in the canal/ear; ITC = in the canal: MIC = mini in canal; CIC = completely in canal;and IIC = invisible in canal.

With all the above, we are left with one more code to explain - what is BAHA?

To explain the acronym consider this. The conductive function of normal hearing, the middle ear, can be gone. This loss can occur from severe infection, by trauma, or by congenital defect. If though, the inner ear, the cochlea, is intact functionally, then can hearing be imparted or boosted by transmitting vibrations of hearing range frequency directly to the respective bone area. And BAHA, is not a new religion, but rather is, a bone anchored hearing aid.

One final observation, in this device technology, radio wave energy, or wireless energy transmission, like bluetooth in telephony, may be used.
